Mafia is that party game you may have played, where there is a mafia (informed minority) trying to overtake an entire village and the villagers (uninformed Majority) are trying to stop them. We play these mafia games over several days in our forum and we have people from all over the world playing them. These mafia games can be themed from movies, real life situations and almost anything you can think of! Mafia involves a lot of creative strategy, making you think on your toes. How do these look?

Small Basic Mafia
Baddie. Wincon: Eliminate the goodies.
1) Kill.


Goodies. Wincon: Lynch the baddie.
1) Spy.
2) Save.
3) Vanilla.
4) Vanilla.


Tie lynch = no one dies. Baddie wins if they enter a day phase in a 1-on-1 scenario with no lynch to be followed by kill.



Spy Mafia
Baddie. Wincon: Eliminate the goodies.
1) Kill.


Goodies. Wincon: Lynch the baddie.
1) Sane spy. Receives correct results on whether he spied a goodie or baddie.
2) Insane spy. Receives opposite results: told goodie if he spied a baddie, told baddie if he spied a goodie.
3) Naive spy. Always told he spied a goodie.
4) Paranoid spy. Always told he spied a baddie.


Goodies are not told which of the four types of spy they are.
Tie lynch = no one dies. Baddie wins if they enter a day phase in a 1-on-1 scenario with no lynch to be followed by kill.



Larger Basic Mafia
Baddies. BTSC and NK. Wincon: Majority.
1) Vanilla.
2) Vanilla.


Goodies. Wincon: Eliminate baddies.
1) Spy.

5) Vanilla.


Tie lynch = no one dies.


Power Roles Mafia
Baddies. BTSC and NK with no carrier, may exchange NK for two RID kill attempts. Wincon: Majority.
1) Spy.
2) Redirect.


Goodies. Wincon: Eliminate baddies.
1) Spy.
2) Kill.
3) Block.
4) Save.
5) Vote multiplier x2 on anyone except self.


OOP: Block > Redirect. Kills are not blocking.
A redirected spy is not informed if he's redirected.
Tie lynch = no one dies.



Game of Liars
Baddies. BTSC and NK. Wincon: Majority.
1) Appears as goodie if spied.
2) Lynch frame, ODTG.


Goodies. Wincon: Eliminate baddies.
1) Faction spy.
2) Save.
3) Vote multiplier x2 on anyone except self.
4) Vanilla.
5) Appears as baddie if spied.


Tie lynch = no one dies.



Killers Mafia
Baddies. NO BTSC. Wincon: Majority.
1) Kill. Is told which player is baddie #2.
2) Instant kill, ODTG. Can be submitted at any time including day phases. Unsavable. Prevents night actions and voting. Is NOT told who baddie #1 is.
Inherits the kill if baddie #1 dies.


Goodies. Wincon: Eliminate baddies.
1) Spy.
2) Save.
3) Kill.
4) Vote multiplier x2 on anyone except self.


Indy. Wincon: RID kill two players, ends the game.
1) RID kill, unsavable. Can survive one kill or instant kill attempt and appear as being saved.


Kills are not blocking except for baddie #2.
Tie lynch = no one dies.

I quite like Spy Mafia as well http://mafiamaniac.org/smile/happy.gif. I believe the Small Basic may need restrictions on the save, not self and not the same player twice in a row, otherwise it may be a bit too in favour of the spy confirming too many goodies for the baddie to win. http://mafiamaniac.org/smile/shrug.gif

Regarding Small basic mafia ...

Maybe give the baddie 1x Vote manipulator as long as save is still alive, or die roll

I'm writing up the announcement and template sticky as we speak. Nana has greenlighted the first two options to be added as templates but I'll leave the others until after the discussion. Looks good, tho'.

The first one needs to change the save to a vanilla, 1 baddie vs 1 spy and 3 vanilla, that is how it ran on mmbot and was considered balanced.

I like the suggestions CK and Saab made, maybe add as optional version?

The third one is a setup I heard is balanced elsewhere, so maybe it is good to try out here too? Spymafia is ofc ok. http://mafiamaniac.org/smile/smile.gif

Ah, thanks. My memory of MMbot is pretty hazy. Save should be changed to a vanilla in Small Basic.
Larger Basic would probably need to have a baddie with a Block or Redirect ability then, to keep the spy from outing and getting saved.
And now I'm tempted to give Game of Liars a baddie ability to make it look like one of their own got saved from the NK.

Haha, that's really funny because I actually put a block there but Nana queried it so I edited it out. Apparently the small baddies 2 listed above is confirmed to be balanced.
I feel kinda bad not giving baddies anything but balance is so tight in small games that the addition of half a player (i.e adding a vanilla or converting a vanilla to an active role) can have a big enough effect that it unbalances the game. I guess we could try it both ways and see how it runs in practice.

Edit1: And that is a very good point about the spy being saved. There just isn't time for the baddie to uncover the save and kill them prior to killing the spy. Even the spy clearing one extra goodie would break the game for the baddie.

Edit2: And if adding that block unbalances the game, we will just have to add another vanilla goodie. One thing is for sure, a spy and save without some counterbalance like an unsaveable RID killl or a block will not work.

Hmm. I am spy, I spy a goodie n1, and I out it d1 and request to be saved. I go on to confirm goodies or catch baddies. Baddies are forced to kill whoever I confirm as goodie, but odds are in goodie favor I think.

Maybe they do need a block to shut the spy up?

The only way it works is if save dies N1, then spy outs himself waiting to be saved and baddies take the chance and kill him (which would be a huge risk when every kill counts). Or if spy dies N1.

Really, there is no reason for spy not to out himself D1, or even N1 for the save.
