Welcome to MafiaManiac, a site is dedicated to the growth and expansion of the online forum game of Mafia.

Mafia is that party game you may have played, where there is a mafia (informed minority) trying to overtake an entire village and the villagers (uninformed Majority) are trying to stop them. We play these mafia games over several days in our forum and we have people from all over the world playing them. These mafia games can be themed from movies, real life situations and almost anything you can think of! Mafia involves a lot of creative strategy, making you think on your toes. You'll be forced trust your gut, check your logic, and deceive or be deceived. If you think you can handle playing, here are a few links you should definitely check out.

It may seem obvious to you which player(s) to investigate first at first glance of this question, but there are Pros and Cons to each of these answers.

If you investigate your scummiest read first and they turn out to be scum, it would almost appear like you have wasted a night to investigate just to confirm your read.

If you investigate your Nullest reads first then you get no confirmation on your scummiest read and it almost ends up being a crap shoot.

If you investigate what you believe to be the most influential/brst player first, if they are town they may not even make it through the night without being NKed.

So Who do you investigate first?

N1 I would either spy one of the ppl I need to know whether I can trust OR someone acting scummy. After that, I'd investigate my scum reads.

There. Now everyone who is overconfident in their epicness will block me N1. http://mafiamaniac.org/smile/dry.gif

I spy purely by gut.

Interesting.

I know that unless you have some decent amount of experience under ones belt it can be hard for people to rely on your reads if they are just 'gut' reads. I guess that means I am assuming that you also read people by gut. I just assume that people are usually more analytical when using their PR even if they do read people by gut. Investigating by gut is an interesting perspective and one that I have not heard before. People usually have a system in place when they are a PR so that it is not as easy to make a mistake.

I do have a question though: what is your gut based on?

Feeling. Intuition. It usually goes by "I want to know X' role because it just feels like a good idea"

This is mostly for N1 when everything's up in the air. I mix my gut/intuition with actual reads, my meta bank and reaction tests. My reads usually start at only gut level, but then, thanks to the aformentioned factors, the reads evolve.

Interesting poll, welcome to the site http://mafiamaniac.org/smile/smile.gif

The other concern with regards to checking your scummiest read is that if you have been pushing hard prior to the check and if he or she turns out to be town you have to "flip" your stance on him/her without painting a flashing "hi mafia, I am the cop, please shoot me" sign on your head http://mafiamaniac.org/smile/whistle.gif

My personal choice would be option D: the player whose alignment I believe gives me the most information with regards to wagonomics and interactions and such. Preferably one that I have not publicly taken a strong stance as of yet http://mafiamaniac.org/smile/lol.gif

Why not spy inactives, or people that aren't contributing with much info. There's always a healthy list of this type of players. Surprisingly even in Championship Games from what I've seen .

1. if they are bad ... you can advocate for their lynch due to inactivity
2. If they are good you can focus on other inactive players

The thinking is that the active players, if scum, have more chances to slip/trip over Boq's gut http://mafiamaniac.org/smile/smile.gif

Nice to see Saab is back http://mafiamaniac.org/smile/happy.gif

The issue I can see with spying an inactive is similar to spying your top suspect as good. Treating one inactive differently than the others will appear scummy to town, they will attempt to draw conclusions about you being mafia teammates with said player http://mafiamaniac.org/smile/shrug.gif and it may paint a cop target on your forehead to the mafia http://mafiamaniac.org/smile/unsure.gif

http://mafiamaniac.org/smile/smile.gif thanks and congrats Champ http://mafiamaniac.org/smile/XD.gif.

The nice thing about inactives is that you cannot really grill them cause they are not here to respond http://mafiamaniac.org/smile/tongue.gif so most of the day you will grill actives while spying the inactives. Only if you get no leads you can advocate for lynching an inactive. So from a pile people would not find it too suspicious if if you pick one. It looks like you picked one from Boq's hat. If you get a baddie yep you might draw scum attention but also the save's attention http://mafiamaniac.org/smile/tongue.gif.
Once you get enough info on actives you can advocate for lynching one of them so no suspicion from town for leaving an inactive alone cause you have real concerns about an active player. It's not like you are a mindless robot "Must kill inactives".

You can also leave an identified inactive baddie alone until later.

This tactic would be used for the first phases of the game ... later well you can switch it up to one of the previously discussed strategies based on info on the active players. Personally I prefer getting town results rather than bad results cause then you have the problem of convincing other without claiming. Since there are more than one baddie you would most likely get offed sooner rather than later.

I'm not sure if this answered your concerns ... english is my second language and well it is hard expressing complicated thoughts. Easy thoughts like "I lynch Slick for ESP" is easy http://mafiamaniac.org/smile/XD.gif

I can say right away that I absolutely hate being cop, because I feel like I am in an uncomfortable situation (especially when I spy people bad at N1) and I am just bad at subtly getting people lynched without revealing that I am a cop.

I think that the best time to do it though is one of these options:
A) You are pretty sure that you are the NK target, thus you must give the other goodies your results (this is during night). This can actually make the baddies hesitate from killing you.
B) You have gotten a significant amount of baddies during your spies
C) It is end game.
