Welcome to MafiaManiac, a site is dedicated to the growth and expansion of the online forum game of Mafia.

Mafia is that party game you may have played, where there is a mafia (informed minority) trying to overtake an entire village and the villagers (uninformed Majority) are trying to stop them. We play these mafia games over several days in our forum and we have people from all over the world playing them. These mafia games can be themed from movies, real life situations and almost anything you can think of! Mafia involves a lot of creative strategy, making you think on your toes. You'll be forced trust your gut, check your logic, and deceive or be deceived. If you think you can handle playing, here are a few links you should definitely check out.

I think we need a working example on this otherwise data will be too messy to aggregate.

... A red bird of my desire came and sat upon my shoulder, and I wrote a note and tied it to its leg and sent it off into the west. It said, "I'll be back," and it was signed by me.
... I saw my earlier selves as different people, acquaintances I had outgrown. I wondered how I could ever have been some of them.
... *shrug* Good-bye and hello, as always.

I'll grab Era 1 since I've already studied most of it. If no one else will take 5.1 and 5.2 by the time I'm finished, then I'll continue with them.

Are there any BD games associated with Era 3, or are they either non-existent or encapsulated in 2.2 or 4.1?

A good programmer is someone who always looks both ways before crossing a one-way street.

Two novels can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other involves orcs.

I've finished my writeup of era 1, tell me what you think and if you see any errors or if there's something that should be changed:

Era 1… the rise of mafia…

I, completely and shamelessly ripping the intriguing forum game of mafia from another website, was somewhat of a Prometheus figure: those before me (the Zeus figure haha) had done the _real_ work and I just brought the "torch" so to speak to a new territory. That torch ("Mafia", now referred to as "Mafia 1" due to the raging flood of mafias that followed it) came to Brainden.com/forum's "Others" section on June 20th, 2008, at 6:13 pm. KOP (kingofpain) became the first to sign up, about an hour later. Another hour and Thuhchris signed up, followed by Frost, Itachi-san, Brandonb, grey cells, pieman. IMLRG (I remember him as the first Grim Reaper) joined. Then dnae. Then pw0nzd joined to make 10, and I started the game. Akaslickster joined right after this. And then it began...

I had no idea at that moment that mafia would grow to become such a huge deal, spawnig first the creation of a "Games" forum on Brainden (for both mafia and a few other random games I and others had been starting) and eventually over four additional sites in the brainden mafia "nebula", a network of interconnected member-sharing forums dedicated to one thing and one thing only: a vicious game of deception & elimination known as… mafia…

People look back at the first few games with what I think is a bit of a rosy gloss - the truth is that I was a weak host. Letting players join late, being too nice about when the times ended such that controveries erupted like volcanoes about whether certain votes counted etc. There was a lot of arguing that went on. Things got personal, quite often. We were a heated bunch. Since then, after the mafia mentality has more or less set in, people have been able to better "distance" themselves from their ruthless innocent-sniping goodie-burning enemy-lynching friend-stabbing alter egoes. But it wasn't always so, and I think people forget that.

One thing that hasn't been forgotten is the thrill of victory, and the crushing fall of defeat. And all the conniving and double-crossing that happens in between. Those are things that made mafia special and continue to make it so. I think the specific format of mafia isn't the only possible game framework that succeeds in this, because over the couple years of progress we've had all kinds of wacky games, twists and turns - but much of it based on the original idea and the spirit that prevails. Hosts get too much credit; if it weren't for the intelligence and dedication of players, mafia would be nothing but a story. Stories are fun yes but through media like the internet we can get interactive stories, linking people of all ages, genders, nationalities, viewpoints, attitudes, and time zones. These are the things that make mafia great and I know that MafiaManiac continues this tradition. I regret not being a bigger part of it than I have been, though I've been exponentially busy with life in general since the dwindling down of Mafiosphere and the long lull of activity on Brainden… but MafiaManiac is bringing it all back to life.

Despite this glorious present it's important too to remember the past, which is why this History project is such a good idea. If time can ease the loss of a loved one in real life it can certainly ease the cybernetic loss of your avatar, so it's always fun to look back and relive. That's why I hope anyone reading this will enjoy the History Of Mafia, and experience the highs and lows of mafia on a journey through time.

@URL - that was beautiful. Some paragraphs can also fit as an overall intro to the History of Mafia project.
But I think at least a final paragraph should encompass the whole era or something ... E.g. new hosts, long-streaks of one-faction victories, unfortunate first-to-die's, anything that could be highlighted as an attribute of that Era or a landmark that should be mentioned.
I'm aware it is a rather vague idea atm, but hopefully it should be easier to write after that Era's table is completed. http://img22.imageshack.us/img22/5651/post598012563908168249.gif

And now to more down-to-earth matters:
@Fox:
1) I implicitly assumed "Last surviving" = alive after last day/nightpost. If that is so, for earlier mafias where the Bomb happens to die with the last remaining enemy, I would not count him as surviving?
My dilemma is in Mafia II where KOP is lynched yet the Bomb also dies with him (?)
QUOTE

and congrats to the surviving Innocents
Itachi [Sage]
Frost [Vigilante]
Pw0nzd [Doctor]

as well as

Pieman [Bomb] even though he died at the end to blow up KOP

Which puzzles me since the role says nothing about this:
QUOTE

* Bomb- knows who the Inspector is. When (if) the Bomb dies, there is a half chance that they will take their killer down with them. If their killer is the Mafia, a random Mafioso will be killed- however the Mafia is informed at the beginning of the game who the Bomb is. If the Bomb's killer is the Grim Reaper, the Grim Reaper would blow up. If the Bomb is lynched, the Innocent who was most outspoken for the lynching (chosen by me) is blown up. If I can't decide, I pick randomly from the Innocents that voted for the Bomb

2) In the rosters, for replacements can we use the same notation i.e. LastPlayer (First Player) i.e. place the replacement before the person that was replaced for inactivity? Also, following Unreality's first notation Player2 is the reincarnation of Player after player dies (since re-player is kinda hard to spot, but has been used in other mafias as well, I remember re-dawh at least).

For the bomb, they wouldn't have survived at the end so don't count them.

For replacements, I'd put the replacement first and then the original player in brackets. smile.gif

Quick Edit: According to GM, you don't need to do all of an era [Era 2 (2.1 and 2.2) for example ] to get two rep points, just one part smile.gif

My Era 4 write up rough draft. Thoughts please smile.gif

~~~~~~~
Era 4 of Mafia was filled with a lot of old things and a lot of new things. When I arrived on BD in February of 2009 I really didn’t see any pull from the game section, seeing it as merely another forum secondary to that of the Logic Puzzles, but I feel that this changed very quickly during this time. While many of the more ‘veteran’ or experienced players were on Mafiosphere, there was a rise of a lot of new players, sequel mafias, and new traditions and ways of organizing the game of Mafia.
The first notable thing during this time was the rise of new players. With big games and lots of room there was plenty of room for newer members to try out the game of Mafia. I was happy to join up myself during scsw’s Fantasy Mafia and I haven’t looked back since, and neither did some other new people who joined. Everyone was willing to learn from the more experienced players who still played on BD such as Kat, Andromeda, woon, crazypainter and of course Grey Cells. That being said, there were others who were unwilling to learn. We had large bouts with inactivity in most games stemming from some hopeful newbies who fell off the face of the earth. However I feel that contributions from some veteran members and the constant work of tpax, Framm, abhisk, Magic, Music, DarthNoob DudleyDude, and even Medji and Sayalzah (who hosted a very successful Wheel of Time Mafia before disappearing from the Mafia scene) helped keep Mafia going during this time.
Mafias in general during this era were a little less Franchise, and more about series of good ideas. PrinceMarth85 (Ye Olde Mafia 1 and 2), scsw (Fantasy Mafia 1 and 2), and myself (High School Mafia 1, 2, and 3.) all made sequels of our successful mafias. Even Mekal came in and made a Cruise Ship Mafia 3, which I remember fondly for being killed on the last day but still winning as a baddie and being buried in Jamaica by PM85, the only man left standing. Overall there were a lot of fun games. But as mentioned before inactivity was a bother. Ye Olde Mafia had to be restarted because of it, Terminator Mafia was terminated for a while because of host inactivity. But when these games were active, they were epic and really fun. They weren’t really overly complicated and were just the right amount of difficulty to attract new people while keeping more veteran ones entertained.
Lastly, there were some organizational type things that were used during this time that have stuck over on BD. First of all Era 4 began the idea of clarifying a few things before each Mafia. Tie votes, priority of night actions, and other little details started getting out of the way earlier and earlier so that everyone could strategize accordingly. There also was a massive influx of Mafias, leading me to make a Google Docs spreadsheet of all the game ideas on BD. Rookie pinned the topic on top of UR’s guide to Mafia and it has been used whenever there were too many games in order to keep a constant flow of Mafias. To be honest, the order was chaotic and hard to manage during the beginning of this era but there weren’t enough Mafia hosts to cause a conflict. Now we have the system of signing up to host games and it has worked splendidly.
Mafia on BD lost a lot of familiarity during this era, with many smart, valuable members not around as often. But this made it so new members like myself and others could flourish and test their merit in playing and creating mafias. I know that I enjoyed that along with many others and that this era really set up the formation of MafiaManiac.
